Sickness strikes!
Well, since some of you might not know where i spent the last two weeks and it has been ages since i updated my LJ anyhow: I had the flu from hell, worst sickness i had in *all my life.. The first night i had 41.5C /106.5F fever complete with hallucinations, first time i ever had those. really icky too, time was stretched out so every ten minutes seemed like 2 or 3 hours and i kept imagining that the meaty bits of my body have crumbled down and i gotta try and put them back together so i can at least *start to get healthy again >.< Ah well.. at least the next day the doctor came and prescribed some meds to keep my fever down so it was sort of okayish, and my dad looked in on me once a day to provide me with medication and food. Still was bedbound for 6 days straight. At least now i am okay again, still coughing a lot tho :p One very unhappy result from that I now have a real problem with one of my roommates. I have 2 of those, one very useful and smart and helpful, who sadly was on university excursion in costa rica when this all happened, and the other who is.. dumb. Well, she is actually, cannot be helped. And she was no help at *all. Due to her reactions during my sickness i at first assumed that she is somehow too stupid to understand how bad i am off but afterwards it turned out that she *did understand and just couldn't be bothered to even look in to check on me *once during those 5 days. When i was sick enough that i might have *died the first night ( any temperature above 42C / 107.5F is acutely life threatening). And she just tells me that face to face. So now i have to live in the same apartment with someone who basically does not care whether I live or die and whom i consequently ignore as if she would not exist. What makes matters worse is that she is the sister of the other, smart roommate. Who is fair enough to not judge in a situation where she was not involved. but still, a very very *very unpleasant situation -.- On a happier note, during my sickness i discovered Flanders & Swann, a pair of British musical comedians from the 30s - 50s. They are fun! Check them on a p2p program ^^ Current Mood: uncomfortableCurrent Music: Flanders & Swann - Mud, Mud, glorious mud | | Saturday, February 1st, 2003 | | 2:45 am |

RAaah!
So i call at work to find out my new, changed shifts for next week and hear that it all has been cancelled and we keep the old 7 to 7 rule after all. Okay, it is sensible, it is good for me but.. GAAH! Does that guy *think before making decisions or does he let his right brainside make all the decisions up as he goes along? ( and i only found out by calling them by chance, otherwise i'd have noticed when i would have come at a wrong time next week. Oh well, guess i should see the good bits of it ^.^ ( but good grief..!) jobloss rant
Okay, yesterday my boss finally officially popped it that our office gets closed. He started with the words " As you already know anyhow.." *Proving that the yellow bastard waited until we all heard the rumours because he was too cowardly to tell us straight away even when he already knew about it back in october. Now the "good" news is that it will continue till the end of february yet, and not only till the 14th as we expected. The bad news is that.. "In order to cut down on expenses" the emergency call center will be run by the ordinary office staff during workday office hours. That sounds.. semireasonable. What it *means though is that while our previous shifts were from 7 till 7 ( one day, one night) our new shifts will be.. from 4 pm till midnight, and from midnight to 8 am on weekdays, and from 12 till 12 on weekends, meaning we work less hours at extremely complicated to remember times (at the border of weekend/weekday), get payed less and yet it fucks up *more days than before. Now with a single weekend shift the complete weekend is useless for anything beside work. And as for the saving bits. I don't know what Lohnnebenkosten are in english, but.. when a company employs you they don't just have to pay you your wages but also pay money for employing you in the form of.."taxes" Which are quite high over here since we are a much more government focused economy than the US ( canadians might feel more familiar with it) As a rule of thumb you can say that the wages the employee gets make one third of the total costs they mean for the company. And *those don't depend on whether that employee works 1 hour a week or 80. So in fact the "great saving" they make comes out to saving one ninth of what they'd have payed us, and makes live much much much more awkward for everyone. Which is so very usefull, when we for example are working in an office that is easily twice too big for the number of people that work there. We have three large rooms that are practically empty and unused all the time. But we can afford to pay rent for the space, oh yes. Just not to pay us. AAAAAAAARGH! i could deal with losing my job if the boss would just not be such a chickenshit moron! Like getting us a new dishwasher for the kitchen when he knows we'll close in a few months for 350 euro but making us call 0664 numbers only from a special cellphone because that way we save 3.50 e telephone costs per month >.< Sigh... We are important!
Within our lifetime, brief as it seems we all have born witness to dramatic changes in our world, political, economical, ecological and others. 30 years seems a brief flicker of time, a mere second compared to history but it isn't. It is a full percent already of what has happened since the first real nations and monotheistic Religions were formed, and hal a percent of the time since we learned to even till the soil and build houses. And we not only bear witness, but by witnessing we also are Responsible for what happens with this world. None of us is too small to count, and none of us can , in latter days, when your grandchildren ask you to tell them the stories of the end of the second millenium claim innocence for what happened there, in good or bad. eh.. i never was able to probely put words to my thoughts, but maybe the gist still gets through.. Just a.. spark of thought for the day Current Mood: ImportantCurrent Music: Midnight Oil - Beds are burning | | Wednesday, December 4th, 2002 | | 7:14 pm |
The US Dollar is a strange currency...
Idle thoughts that i came upon when studying the 1$ bill i brought home as a souvenir from AnthroCon 2001: 1) Have you noticed how the dollar bill has amessage on it saying "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private" ? I would assume that by today most nations would assume that their citicens *knew what money is without having to write instructions on them and 2) on the other hand US *coins are quite unique as well, is as every other currency i know has coins where the value is given in numbers. So you'd assume that on the cent coins it'd say 1 cent, 5 cent, 25 cent... Not so! US coins have only a single value, 1, with the *name of the value underneath: 1 nickel, 1 dime, 1 quarter dollar... Parents are nifty
if they take me to venice over the weekend! should be fun, even if the weather report predicts rain :p I definitely need a vacation anyhow, is rather more than a year since i have left my home for more than one day >.< In German there is a phrase that "einem die Decke auf den Kopf fallt" Of the ceiling falling down on your head, meaning you cannot see your own four walls anymore without a break. Daso's Birthday
Friend of mine had his 28th birthday yesterday so we went out to celebrate. He got a witchhunter's/inquisitor's Kit from us, complete with rosary, bible, Malleus Maleficarum (The church's standard tome on witchcraft, written by two dominican monks in the 14th century) matches and cat of nine tails. I made a nicer cover for the Malleus cause the one it had sucked and had a really really cheezy text on the back cover. And I wrote the Papal edict declaring him a Witchhunter. ^.^ He really liked it too, of course immideately starting to whip everyone present. We then went out to celebrate into the Centimeter. It's really fun when you almost never drink alcoholic beverages when you suddenly start drinking as if you practice every night :D The point is that i do not like the *taste of most alcoholic drinks, so i am not the type to drink for social reasons a glass of beer or two. When i drink it is with the aim to get *drunk and you just can't do that casually and certainly not with one beer. Between the 4 of us who partook properly of the beer ( very nice 11 proof budweiser (<-- ORIGINAL budweiser, which has totally nothing to do with American Bud) ), being Daso (birthday friend) the other David, his girlfriend Iris and me, we managed 30 liters beer topped with some nice schnapps. And plenty of food. PLENTY of food. Heh, made a very happy kitty and happy other people too. Most people were cheap and left at midnight, but the four of us and daso's GF Lidia went on to another bar, having a *very happy time on the way there. Was finally something nice, the last couple weeks were kinda crappy. Ah well, i promised not to whine here ^.^ content happy cat right now anyhow Current Mood: amusedCurrent Music: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Rollercoaster | | Wednesday, October 23rd, 2002 | | 4:50 pm |
my tale of woe pt 2: Mrs Jones
Okay. so i have a 24 hour shift. fine. usually things are quiet anyhow so that means it's bearable. Oh no. not today. It is 5 pm now and ever since my shift started at 7 am it has been the workday from HELL. Constant emergency calls, the sales manager has picked today for demonstrations so a huge load of demonstration alarms and the telephone also constantly ringing. and then Mrs Jones ( name changed for data confidentiality) We got the first call from mrs Jones on sunday during my day shift. She called and told me that she fell on friday afternoon and could not get up. WTF? why was she waiting 2 days to sound the alarm? what did she think those wristbands are for? a telepathic link to us? okay, never mind. she fell, she needs help. fine. is my job. I sent the ambulance. they went there, helped her up and took care of her ( gruesome job, you may imagine bodily functions of two days here if you like) Since she was in a very bad state of health they wanted to take her to the hospital. Mrs. Jones refused. Since that sunday we had ELEVEN emergency calls from her, either falling down and not able to get up or just general bad health. Every time we sent social service or during night time the ambulance. Every time Mrs Jones refused to come along to the hospital. And every time she complains at lenght to our operator ( i.e. often me) that this is such shoddy service becuase the ambulance takes so long to get to her ( = 10 to 15 minutes :/ ) And that she'll call her congressman ( well, really her volksanwalt, but congressman is the closest equivalent that most of you would know) This morning i sent social services there AGAIN. same game. then at noon she decides that she feels bad and should go to the hospital! So she calls her doctor because she believes that she needs a doctor to get into a hospital. Then at 1 pm she calls me. Complains at lenght that the doctor is not here. demands i telephone link her to the doctor. I explain to her that i cannot do this since it is technically impossible, but tell her i'll call the doctor for her. I call the doctor. The doctor tells me in kind but obviously also already quite unnerved words that she has a schedule with mrs jones for TWO pm. I call mrs jones, explain that to her. she lenghtily complains to me about what cheek that is, congressman, yatta yatta yatta. Okay. doctor comes. social service comes too. Mrs jones is fed up with the inefficient service of the Social service, cancels her contract with them. 10 minutes later. I get an emergency call. Mrs Jones. I should call the ambulance so they can get her to the hospital. I call the hospital. They know mrs jones already very well. Tell they'll send an ambulance as soon as they have a free one, but since it isn't an emergency it might take a bit. I call mrs. jones. I explain. She totally flies off the handle, her an old sick lady, how dare they... I very *very kindly ask her why she didn't go along all those times before. Well, she wasn't washed and in clean clothes and her apartment wasn't cleaned up >.< Okay. from then on for 85 minutes till the ambulance arrives She calls me in 5 minute intervalls to complain. And in those times between her calls i have to handle the rest of the calls and emergencies >.< And 14 hours of shift left... Okay. now they have her in the ambulance. With *luck I'm rid of her for a day. maybe two. Let us breathe deeply and pray. (no, i am not about to murder anyone, not even myself. but i had not known before that i have this big an allowance of patience for dreadfull old bitches) Current Mood: aggravatedCurrent Music: Die Toten Hosen - Alex | | 4:19 pm |
My tale of woe, Part 1
Yes, the kitten has a 24 hour workshift today. How did this come about? Well, my own fault of course. Tuesday (i.e. yesterday) i had to give a presentation of how my masters thesis is coming along to my tutor professor. I wanted to put it all in order and presentable form last friday. But.. instead i "decided" to lock myself out of my apartment from 12 noon till 8 pm after going shopping for food for 10 minutes. Well.. and afterwards i had to take a 30 minute hot shower to thaw again and get tucked into bed to not catch pneumonia ( of course it had ~10 degree celsius / 50 Farenheit and was drizzling..) Okay. saturday i had day shift, went from there directly to a clubbing that i had planned with others for over a month so could hardly skip, from there to a shower and straight on to sunday day shift. so, after 36 hours of work and dancing i thought i *might catch some sleep ( am not 19 anymore) So, all that left to prepare the presentation was monday. on which i had day shift too. So i *HAD to swap with some of the other call center people. One of them is on holiday. One had monday night shift already. One has visitors from sweden so is unavailable all week. The only one left *would swap with me but only wednesday. which is fine with me, apart from the fact that i have night shift already so... --> 24 hour shift. And now the punchline of the whole story: *drumroll* When i went to university yesterday my tutor had called in sick HOO HAH! Current Mood: aggravatedCurrent Music: Aqua - Dr Jones | | 9:17 am |
